This anthology consists of a selection of poems submitted to the Shoreham Wordfest 10 line Poetry Competition, in 2020. The competition was created to celebrate Shoreham Wordfest’s 10th anniversary.
The competition was judged by poet John McCullough, winner of the 2020 Hawthornden prize for literature with his collection Reckless Paper Birds. No theme was specified, so there is a wide range of subject and tone, explored in skilful and engaging language.
In his introduction John comments:
“Writing a good short poem involves packing a lot into a small space. Concision is key: there’s no time to explain context in depth. As a result, many of the best competition entries relied on silence and implication, on the reader using their imagination to feed on nuances and unpack subtexts.
All of them had something about them that stayed with me. I hope you all enjoy reading them as much as I did.
