Sussex Modernism; artists, lives and works
Sunday, 8th October 2017
Talk by Dr. Alistair Davies
Dr Alistair Davies from the University of Sussex will give
an illustrated talk, exploring the lives and works of some
the celebrated groups of modernist writers and artists who lived and worked in Sussex during the last century: Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant at Charleston Farmhouse, Virginia and Leonard Woolf
at Rodmell, Eric Gill and David Jones at Ditchling, Peggy Angus and her circle at Furlongs. Lee Miller and Roland Penrose at Farley Farm House.
Covering a wide span from the First World War to the 1960’s, Alistair will discuss what drew these figures to Sussex, how they responded to the world around them, and the contributions they made to the modernist movement in Britain.
